Literacy

Reading | Writing | Speaking & Listening

At SPJE, we believe that English is central to the learning and development of our students.

Confident Communicators.

Challenging young learners in literacy helps create confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and informed citizens. It is through the study of English that individuals learn to analyse, understand, communicate and build relationships with others and with the world around them. Crucially, the study of literacy at our school helps students to become ethical, thoughtful, informed and active members of society.

Explicit Instruction.
Purposeful Activities.

Literacy instruction at SPJE incorporates explicit instruction in the curriculum areas of Listening and Speaking, Reading and Viewing, Writing, Spelling, and Grammar. Within a rich, engaging, and challenging curriculum, students enjoy reading and discussing wonderful stories, writing in creative ways for a real audience, and in the senior years, participating in debates and giving oral presentations.

Literacy Intervention

For students that require additional support in the area of literacy, SPJE has a dedicated literacy intervention expert to provide targeted support and skills to students that complement the learning that is happening in the classroom.

Parents are encouraged to be involved in their child’s learning through our Classroom Helper Program in the Foundation and Junior classrooms.
